Mexico Part 3 - Inland to Guadalajara

Since we left the Pacific coast we have wound our way towards Guadalajara, stopping first at Colima and then in Comala, another Pueblo Magico. In Comala we enjoyed lunch in the main plaza, interesting food and lots of mariachi bands, before retiring to a quiet campsite in the foot of the Vulcan de Colima. From there we took in Jacotepec and Laguna Chapela. where we were treated to an aerial acrobatic display on the lake shore.

We finally arrived in Guadalajara and our first taste of Mexican rush hour! We managed to find the VW dealer and collect a new jack for the van, which had been previously ordered before resting ahead of a busy day visiting the historic center. Again we were lucky enough to happen upon a beautiful display of jaliscan dancing and music in one of the many Plazas. Next day was Tlaquepaque, a great place to buy local arts and crafts and busy over the holiday weekend, before meeting up with a good friend of Rachel's brother and his parents, who made us most welcome in their beautiful home near Zapopan. Zapopan town was busy, it being a holiday weekend to celebrate the start of spring. In front of the Basilica we noticed a firework contraption being put together, so returned after supper to a wonderful display and to what I hope is the first of many Mexican fireworks.

A trip out of town before the day got hot was on the cards the next day, to the Rio Caliente, where we bathed in the hot spring waters. We spent the afternoon at the Instituto Cultural de Cabanas, where there were some amazing works of art and a great mural by Orozco. Another treat.

After a great weekend, we ventured north to Tequila and a tour and tasting of the Jose Cuervo factory in the town. Extremely interesting and highly recommended!
