On 1st Oct, 2015, we headed off on a journey, hoping to travel around the world.

We have sailed across the Atlantic and up through the Caribbean, toured North, Central and South America  in our VW van and are now enjoying our trip through New Zealand.

We left Rio de Janeiro, heading south.  We had a long drive ahead of us, 4,000 kilometres, on a mixed bag of roads.  Our final destination the container port in San Antonio, Chile.

En route we needed to find a new windscreen for the van.  The screen had...

A jaunt around Brazil wouldn’t be complete without a wander through Rio.

Rio de Janeiro – Brazil’s 2nd largest city with part of the city designated as an UNESCO World Heritage Site.  Mis-named because it is not by a Rio (river), but at the mouth of a huge bay – Guanaba...

Salvador, also known as Saõ Salvador da Bahia de Todos os Santos, was one of the two places we wanted to stop at on our way towards Chile and ultimately New Zealand.  With limited time, we didn't do this city full justice - it is after all the capital of the state of B...

It was finally time to head for the coast, for dunes and kitesurfing.

We drove to Santo Amaro to check out the Lençóis Maranhenses, a vast area of rolling sand dunes and lagoons on the north coast.  We parked-up short of the town, as access to the town and the dunes bey...

From Brasília it was a long drive north to Belém.  We had previously decided to miss the Guyanas and Suriname but, somewhere in route planning, minds changed and the goal became Manaus (a fair way up the Amazon) via the Guyanas.  More on that plan later.

We slept a...

From the Pantanal we headed up into the State of Mato Grosso.  We thought of seeing a few sights in Cuiabá, but as it appeared on the horizon, we realised it wasn't simply a large town - it was a towering city.  We took the ring road and avoided the mayhem.  Continuing...

August 22, 2019

We spent June and the first week of July in the UK, running around and catching up with friends and family.  A few too many drinks, a lot of food and three separate birthday cakes for an old bugger who turned 60.  With the festivities over, we returned to Uruguay on 8t...

August 4, 2019

On a Sunday morning at the end of April, we crossed from Paraguay to Brazil at Ponta Porã.  With the knowledge that Rachel's passport was due to expire in July, we were hoping to obtain a Temporary Import Permit of 90 days for the van, to cover the period of our intend...
